    This was so interesting!! What words of wisdom! I have noticed that both the oil painters you interviewed are wearing gloves? My first painting class was in oils when I was 10 years old....a long, long, time ago and I remember always leaving class with a headache and paint all over my hands, is this a new recommendation for oil painters? Thank you, love these interviews, thank you for taking the time out of your beautiful trip to share these interviews!!!

    Emily, great painting and video. But I have still a question left, let me ask you. Do you know if the smell of the paint itself is toxic? I got a set of those paints here, and I got to tell you, they still smell a little bit. So, even if you're not using water, there's still may have some toxicity involved. But I was reading about those paints, Winsor e Newton claims that those are made from different materials from regular oils. They're made out of modified linseed oil. So, I'm guessing the paints may be less toxic than the regular ones to some extent. But I'm aware the pigments themselves carry toxic substances. I was using casein paint before as a substitute for oil, though. However, casein is a little bit problematic, especially when painting canvas. You need to gesso the whole thing with several layers in order to smooth and harden the surface as much as possible so the casein paint doesn't crack after it dries.

    • @EmilyOlsonArt
      @EmilyOlsonArt 15 часов назад

      Any fumes from these paints are from the linseed oil, and nontoxic. Cadmium pigments are toxic, yes, but mostly in their powder form.

      @@EmilyOlsonArt great to know! Thanks for the reply, Emily. Now, if you could help me with just one more question. I usually wash my brushes with dish detergent over the palm of my bare hands when I'm done painting. Can this be hazardous somehow? People are advising me into using gloves and such, but I find them annoying to use. They get in the way a little bit. Should I follow those pieces of advice? I have some liver problems and such and I'm worried about those practices. Regards!

    Hullo Emily, thank you for sharing this wonderful portrait of your husband! I have used alcohol markers for years now and I have never used them for finished pieces unless they are used just for an underpainting or base coat for pencils. I have used them for artwork that will be photographed and permanence is not required. I know others make prints from their marker art. I do like them for discovering shading or for quick color studies. I like how they work so well when setting up for pastels, blocking in the shapes and creating small quick studies so I have an idea going forward so I am not wasting my soft pastels, I have used watercolor the same way, but markers dry so much faster! Thank you.

    Amazing work as always 😊 I’ve been experimenting with markers and like my watercolour, I’m still rather heavy handed 😂 I did read recently that using watercolour paper with markers may dry out your markers quicker because the paper is so absorbent, so draws ink out of the markers much more quickly than using other papers. Perhaps that’s what happened to your copics?

    I know in one of your interview videos you had mentioned how people like us think you artists are so gifted and are born with it. Well I understand that it takes a lot of hard work too, but Emily you are both! You are a natural born artist and of course you work meticulously on your art to make it look stupendously awesome. I am registered in your Watercolor Mastery courses, and do find it helpful but it is sometimes so intimidating as you can draw soooooo well and the paintings looks spectacular. I have had trouble drawing the initial sketching (I hate tracing!) and by the time I’m done with the painting, it is so off! Ugh! So you are an amazing teacher and indeed I love your courses, just don’t keep up with it as I should and of course that matters too, I guess. But please do keep inspiring and keep those wonderful tutorials coming. We desparados thrive on it!! 😂 thanks for a new kind of medium I can dip my hands into!!😊

    Daniel is so down to earth with a wealth of information in this video. His works speak for themselves. He is such a seasoned artist that knows what gives him inspiration and the drive to keep painting. In simple words, “quantity means quality”. The more you paint the better your painting’s will evolved to look the best and you won’t believe what you just painted. I found this out first hand after I painted like a mad woman getting ready for my first art show in 1990. I also had the amazing opportunity to meet Elaine de Kooning at her studio in the Hamptons. She was so down-to-earth like Daniel here and very inspirational. She was commissioned to do a painting of JFK when he was alive. She had those preliminary paintings of him, that looked finished, hanging like expensive area rugs in her finished basement along with many early paintings of her husband’s, William de Kooning. I liked her abstracts but her portraits were surreal. I couldn’t wait to get back to my studio to paint after talking with her. I so understand Daniel’s thought on keeping his PleinAir paintings. There are some of my paintings that hold deep memories and I will not sell them. What a GREAT interview! You asked all the right questions with such a natural casual insightful spirit. Thank you !!

    You’ve explained this really well! Wish I’d seen this video before I bought my first set of half pans! I understood the difference between warm and cool yellows and reds but I didn’t know what kind of blues were warm and which were cool so I accidentally got two cool blues😅 which is actually lucky because the art shop is far away so I had to use their website to fix my mistake and all the ultramarines were sold out so I got delft blue instead and it’s now in my top 3 most used colours! So happy accident I guess 😂 I got a free QOR 5ml ultramarine once with an order and it’s beautiful but I never use it. The only way I can describe it is aggressive. It just overpowers all the other colours and moves so fast and is explosive! Which is probably great for certain styles but for me, the unpredictability stressed me out 😂 I use schmincke so maybe it’s just schmincke that gets dominated by qor and other brands are fine with it 😅
